Studios spend a fair amount of time trying to stop spoilers. Whether it’s actors refusing to talk about anything in interviews for fear of accidentally revealing a secret or the president of Marvel Studios refusing to tell people the title of a film because it itself is a spoiler, secrecy is everywhere. They’re both lavish adaptations of books by beloved genre writers on a premium cable channel. In the war of Game of Thrones spoilers—book fans saying something from the book isn’t a spoiler, since it’s been out for years, versus television fans guarding their ignorance with ferocity—the TV fans have won. Crafting spoiler- free synopses and headlines for Game of Thrones is practically an art. In American Gods not only will this argument not come up, it’s not even relevant.“People ask us often are we worried about spoilers, things like that. But it is the interactions and discussions along the way that is so appealing.”Of course American Gods has a plot. But the sense of mystery that pervades Gaiman’s novel doesn’t drive the show. I could describe the plot in detail and it would convey about a tenth of the beauty of the visuals, the emotion of the actors, the way the music underscores every moment in the TV series perfectly. You would still have to watch even if you knew every plot detail. In any other show, a character coming back as a zombie would be a spoiler. In American Gods, it’s tweeted out by the show’s official account before the show even hits the air. If you’re used to the vagueness of everything HBO releases of Game of Thrones, the openness of American Gods will shock you. While the book is told from the point of view of someone who has no idea who any of these people are, the marketing for American Gods has been very clear about the gods we’re meeting. The Shadow Moon of the TV series isn’t ignorant or confused as much as he is someone who has no belief, so he can’t accept what he’s seeing. In the book, the reveal of Mr. Wednesday’s real identity is an important moment for Shadow. But it’s not a spoiler at this point to say that Ian Mc. Shane’s Mr. Wednesday is Odin, according to Bryan Fuller himself, an executive producer on American Gods and whose last project was Hannibal, another adaptation and update of a book.“When I read the book, I was fully aware of who he was,” explained Fuller. Wednesday, so it never occurred to me that it was spoileriffic because the book’s called American Gods.” an executive producer on American Gods and whose last project was Hannibal, another adaptation and update of a book. It’s always mysterious! Well, boom.’” (“Boom” meaning that the audience gives up and leaves.)American Gods is less interested in being mysterious and more interested in examining its characters and the themes of belief and identity. It’s not straying that far from the original. There are changes—mostly expansions to give characters more time and backstory—but the core of the show is the book. And the beauty of the show is how it interprets it. You can’t spoil that, you just have to watch them do it. The glory is in seeing the interpretation, not obsessing over every little plot detail. I can’t believe that Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller, and Michael Green are writing American Gods fanfiction together. That shit is off the chain.”American Gods is too good in its execution to need secrecy. It only needs to be seen, and nothing can spoil that. The Talented Mr. Ripley (film)The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1. 99. American psychological thriller film written for the screen and directed by Anthony Minghella. An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1. Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf, Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood and Cate Blanchett as Meredith Logue. The novel was previously filmed as Plein Soleil in 1. Tom Ripley is a young man struggling to make a living in 1. New York City. While working at a party, he is approached by the wealthy shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf, who believes that Ripley went to Princeton with his son, Dickie. Greenleaf recruits Ripley to travel to Italy to persuade Dickie to return home to the United States, for which he will pay Ripley $1,0. Ripley accepts the proposal, although he did not go to Princeton and has never even met Dickie. Shortly after his arrival in Italy, Ripley concocts an accidental meeting on the beach with Dickie and his fianc. On one of their jaunts, Dickie and Ripley meet Dickie's friend Freddie Miles, who treats Ripley with barely concealed contempt. A local girl, whom Dickie had impregnated, drowns herself when he refuses to help her financially. Ripley secretly witnesses their final encounter. Dickie begins to tire of Ripley, resenting his constant presence and suffocating dependence. Ripley's own feelings are complicated by his desire to maintain the opulent lifestyle Dickie has afforded him, and by his growing sexual obsession with his new friend. As a gesture, Dickie invites Ripley to sail with him for a last trip to San Remo. Whilst out to sea together, Dickie lashes out when Ripley confronts him about his behavior, and a fight ensues during which Ripley repeatedly strikes Dickie with an oar, killing him. To conceal the murder, Ripley scuttles the boat with Dickie's body before swimming ashore. When the hotel concierge mistakes him for Dickie, Ripley realizes he can assume Dickie's identity. He forges Dickie's signature, modifies his passport and begins living off the allowance provided by Herbert Greenleaf. He uses Dickie's typewriter to communicate with Marge, making her believe that Dickie has deserted her. He checks into two separate hotels as himself and as Dickie, passing messages between them via the hotel staff to provide the illusion that Dickie is still alive. Ripley rents an expensive apartment in Rome and spends a lonely Christmas buying expensive presents for himself. Freddie visits expecting to find Dickie and is immediately suspicious of Ripley, as the apartment is not furnished in Dickie's style, while Ripley appears to have copied Dickie's dress and manner perfectly. Freddie goes back to confront him, but Ripley ambushes and murders him, then disposes of the body. As a result, Ripley's existence becomes a cat- and- mouse game with the Italian police and Dickie's friends. His predicament is complicated by the presence of Meredith Logue, an heiress he met upon his arrival in Italy and to whom he had introduced himself as Dickie. Ripley clears himself by forging a suicide note addressed to Ripley in Dickie's name and moves to Venice. Marge suspects Ripley's involvement in Dickie's death and confronts him after finding Dickie's rings in Ripley's apartment. Ripley is about to murder her but is interrupted by a mutual friend, Peter Smith- Kingsley, who enters the apartment. Though gaining the trust of Dickie's father, Ripley is disquieted when Greenleaf hires American private detective Alvin Mac. Carron to carry out a thorough check. However, Mac. Carron reveals to Ripley that Greenleaf has ordered the investigation be dropped and intends giving Ripley a substantial portion of Dickie's income, with the understanding that certain sordid details about his son's past not be revealed. Marge is dismayed at the resolution, again accusing Ripley before being taken away by Greenleaf and Mac. Carron. Ripley goes on a cruise with Peter, only to discover that Meredith is also on board. Ripley secretly placates her with a kiss, but Peter notices. Ripley realizes he cannot keep Peter from discovering that he has been passing himself off as Dickie, because Peter and Meredith know each other and would certainly be meeting on the cruise. He cannot solve this dilemma by murdering Meredith, because she is accompanied by her family. Going to Peter's cabin, Ripley sobs as he strangles Peter to death before returning to his own cabin. Production. The cliffside resort town of Positano and various villages on the islands of Ischia and Procida, near Naples, were used to represent the fictional town of . Famous locations included the Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna in Rome, and the Caff. He's a monster, but we want him to get away with it. Beyond being devastatingly good- looking, Mr. Law gives Dickie the manic, teasing powers of manipulation that make him ardently courted by every man or woman he knows.
And in that opacity we see horror. The result, while arguably truer to the events of Highsmith's book, is vastly inferior. To say it suffers by comparison to Purple Noon is an understatement. Almost every aspect of Ren. Matt Damon might make a credible Tom Ripley, but only for those who never experienced Alain Delon's portrayal. Ripley is worth seeing more for its undeniably delightful journey than its final destination. Perhaps wall- to- wall amorality and triumphant evil leave too sour an aftertaste even for the most sophisticated anti- Hollywood palate. Ripley begins as an ingenious exposition of the great truth about charming people having something to hide: namely, their utter reliance on others. It ends up as a dismayingly unthrilling thriller and bafflingly unconvincing character study. He turns The Talented Mr. Ripley into a splashy tourist trap of a movie. Since its first publication in 1. Dr. Seuss' classic tale How The Grinch Stole Christmas has captivated readers young and old alike with its delightful story, endearing characters, witty humor and timeless message. For decades, Hollywood filmmakers have tried in vain to secure the motion picture rights for a live- action production of one of Dr. Seuss' books, as Theodor S. Seuss) had repeatedly turned down their requests. Suess, entrusted her husband's legacy to producer Brian Grazer who has mounted some of the most successful and distinguished films of the last decade, including Apollo 1. The Nutty Professor and Liar Liar. Grazer's long- time collaborator and partner at Imagine Entertainment, Ron Howard, who has brought audiences such films as Splash, Willow and Cocoon clearly was the perfect choice to direct. And the filmmakers have gone to incredible lengths to ensure that the overall scope of the mammoth production remains faithful to the original spirit of Dr. Seuss, assembling the very best people working in movies today. From set design to costumes, from special effects to cinematography, from sound to music, Howard and Grazer have managed to transport the viewer to the incredible fantasy world that is Whoville, aided by a creative behind- the- scenes team, most of whom go back with the director for over 1. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. In addition to comedic superstar Jim Carrey, the film also stars Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, Molly Shannon and Taylor Momsen, and is narrated by Oscar. Sought after by Hollywood for years, Theodor S. Seuss) never considered having this book or any of his books turned into movies. He had an unhappy experience in the early 1. The 5,0. 00 Fingers of Dr T (Geisel wrote the fantasy) and the 1. How The Grinch Stole Christmas was something he was very satisfied with and didn't think it could be improved upon. It was organized so that all the major studios sent their top producers to make their pitch to Audrey Geisel in person. Fortunately, Grazer had a relationship with Carrey since he produced the movie Liar Liar which had a worldwide gross of $3. Initially, Howard was supporting Grazer's long quest (he first approached the agent for the Seuss estate in 1. Grazer's partner in Imagine Entertainment. The more Howard started thinking about the uniqueness of the Grinch's character and the visual possibilities that the movie held, the more he started thinking he wanted this project not only for Imagine Entertainment but also for himself to direct. So the intersection of what the Grinch is about thematically and what Jim Carrey is as a performer is a perfect match. She came to the set of Man on the Moon where Andy Kaufman did his impression of Jim Carrey doing the Grinch. I was still flabbergasted when she signed off on me doing the part because the Grinch was such an indelible part of my childhood. I wanted the visual team to create an original and complex world but one which also has a level of irreverence and sophistication that would be cool for kids. Where every element of the movie had to be built from scratch, every actor had to go through an extensive make- up and hair application and, to truly embody the art of Dr. Seuss, extensive and innovative visual effects had to be executed. Nonetheless, these stylistic issues still had to take a backseat to Howard's desire to tell a genuine story with emotional resonance. A design of scientific ingenuity and dazzling imagination led by production designer Michael Corenblith, the production used 2 million linear feet of Styrofoam (with no straight lines in Seuss' world, there was little need for conventional construction methods) to build the various sets. Taking a cue from Seuss' books, Corenblith instilled Whoville with a series of archways, bridges, stairs and spirals that repeats itself to a lesser extent on the interior sets. The Christmas tree is anchored in the middle of the village square with all the buildings radiating out like spikes from this 4. The buildings were designed so that they convey a sense of the history of Whoville, like villages in Europe reflect centuries of inhabitancy. The set was adorned with 8,0. Christmas lights. Seuss books, it's plainly evident that Geisel had an obvious fondness for the ingenious Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi but also was enamored of Moroccan and Islamic architecture. The set for Whoville thusly turned out to be a Who version of a World's Fair. The town hall is neo- classical Greek with the Seuss animals guarding the entrance (reminiscent of the New York Public Library). The closest source material for the cave is probably Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, though the set (Universal's stages 2. To that point, the scene where Cindy invites the Grinch to the Whobilation incorporates nearly all of the set. The set decoration and props are Seussian inspired though it took a lot of trial and error to figure out what . And of course, the issue of what the Grinch should look like and how to construct an appliance for Jim Carrey's very elastic face and a suit that withstands his unique physical comedy. It took some time to get the balance between Seuss- like and human- like for the Whos. But at the same time they were human enough and cute enough to satisfy my aesthetic. He started by doing a version of the make- up on himself, which he showed to Howard and Grazer. During the spring and summer of 1. Baker had Jim Carrey sporadically as he was working back to back on Man on The Moon and Me, Myself and Irene. The design for the Grinch went through numerous incarnations and ironically ended up with basically what Baker first designed on himself in 1. Each hair was individually sewn on and tied twice, so to make a suit from scratch required four months time. Your body gets freer and becomes more of a source of expression. Though the mayor in Seuss' first book, And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street, was the source for Mayor May Who. She began sketching designs in May for a movie that started shooting in September, so the work was fast and furious resulting in the creation of over 4. And of course, there were the hats. Seuss loved hats and his books are filled with them. I saw lots of photos of hors d'oeuvres and so we took that and made head pieces based on a lot of this food. Seuss was writing the book (1. The Lou Who family was sort of a cockeyed version of the perfect '5. TV family and Martha (Christine Baranski) was so much fun since she was sort of like a Barbie doll you dress up in various outfits. The exception was Mayor May Who (played by Jeffrey Tambor) whose shape was reversed, so that he exuded power and looked more powerful in his clothing. His longtime casting directors, Jane Jenkins and Janet Hirshenson, auditioned well over 2. Louis, Missouri, who was still shy of her sixth birthday when she read for the part. Her experience was limited to commercials and one episode of The Cosby Show. She's the voice of reason and the catalyst to moving the story forward that has a lot of impact on how the Grinch thinks and feels. Because Taylor Momsen, as a minor, could only work limited hours, it was necessary to find an adult who could double her. There was lots of stunt work for the character (in the post office, climbing the mountain, riding the sleigh) but finding someone Taylor's size (4. After no luck locally, little people's organizations, the assorted circuses around the country, stunt coordinator Charlie Croughwell tracked down a circus in Russia where Oxana Nenakhova was a star performer. Nearly the exact size, her facial structure was similar and her athletic abilities were beyond question. Schumacher made calls all over the country to obtain photos of all the possible candidates to play Max. One day the Glendale animal shelter called Schumacher about a dog (a mutt with a bit of terrier) that might fill the bill. The dog had run away from home and the shelter picked the dog up. The first time cost the owner $2. By the fourth time the dog had run away from home the fee for the owner was $1. But when I started looking at the animated version (the 1. Chuck Jones cartoon) I noticed that there was similarity in the eyes and when Ron Howard saw her (Kelly) and 2. Though he played around with the idea of using other dogs, he kept coming back to Kelly. The other dogs were used for specialty gags or did something that was counter to what Kelly had to perform. The biggest challenge for Schumacher was getting the dogs together with Jim Carrey (he was working on another movie during most of prep) and getting the dogs to accept what Carrey did as the Grinch. He and Ron would come up with stuff on the spot and sometimes you're not sure how it's going to work out. All came from shelters and after the movie four of them found homes with Grinch crew members. Seuss' world, characters find themselves in situations that defy conventional physics. To your garden- variety mortal, everything looks skewed, but to a Who it's all absolutely square. Bruce Almighty - Jim Carrey meets God (HD)Morgan Freeman portray God as a relatively benevolent, good- humored Deist/Abrahamic deity. During the course of the movie, Freeman/God relates the secular humanist concepts of taking charge of your own life and doing good works as the most holy of acts, and that He is not there to make humans' lives great or miserable, but to present them with opportunities to grow and learn. Most of this falls on deaf ears, initially, as Bruce is a bit of a knucklehead. Carrey plays the role of down- on- his- luck television news field reporter Bruce Nolan, who, after being disappointed in all the shitty luck that God has thrown at him, challenges God and his abilities to make nice things happen to good people. God (played by Morgan Freeman) answers Bruce's challenge, giving him abilities of omnipotence and omniscience for one week, and hilarity ensues. Agent to the Stars - - An Online Novel. I was 2. 8 years old, and I decided that after years of thinking about writing a novel, I was simply going to go ahead and write one. There were two motivations for doing so. First, I was simply curious if I could; I'd had up to that time a reasonably successful life as a writer, but I'd never written anything longer than ten pages in my life outside of a classroom setting. Two, my ten- year high school reunion was coming up, and I wanted to be able to say I'd finished a novel just in case anyone asked (they didn't, the bastards). In sitting down to write the novel, I decided to make it easy on myself. I decided first that I wasn't going to try to write something near and dear to my heart, just a fun story. That way, if I screwed it up (which was a real possibility), it wasn't like I was screwing up the One Story That Mattered To Me. I decided also that the goal of writing the novel was the actual writing of it - - not the selling of it, which is usually the goal of a novelist. I didn't want to worry about whether it was good enough to sell; I just wanted to have the experience of writing a story over the length of a novel, and see what I thought about it. Not every writer is a novelist; I wanted to see if I was. Making these two decisions freed me from a lot of the usual angst and pain that comes from writing a first novel. This was in all respects a . I picked a fun, humorous story - - aliens from another world decide to get an agent - - and I just let it take me where it wanted to go. I banged out the chapters on the weekends, using the weekdays to let my mind figure out what to do next. The writing was fun, and for the most part it was easy, and in three months, the whole thing was done (and just in time for my high- school reunion). Once the novel was finished, I decided, what the heck, I might as well try to sell it. This was not particularly successful. The agents I shopped it to liked the writing, but said humorous SF was hard place; the publishers liked the writing but said humorous SF was hard to sell. I wasn't terribly put out about this; this was a practice novel, after all. But on the other hand I thought it was good enough to let other people see it. So in early 1. 99. I decided to put it online as a . If they didn't like it, well, clearly, they wouldn't have to send me anything. It was a no- risk proposition for the reader. I didn't expect to see a dime from it, but as it turns out, over five years I made about $4,0. I think it was about that much. I stopped counting after a while. I know I made enough to buy a laptop and lots of pizzas. More than enough). Fast forward to today. My second novel, Old Man's War, did indeed sell to a publisher, thanks in no small part to the experience earned writing this novel. And between the writing of this novel and the publication of that one, five other books slipped out of my brain, due in some measure to my confidence that I could write book- length works, be they fiction or non- fiction. In a sense, this novel is the midwife to every book since. For this reason alone, it holds a special place in my heart. It doesn't hurt that it's a fun story, too. And now here it is for you to read. I'm no longer soliciting a dollar if you enjoy the novel; the story has long since proved its worth in that respect. I offer it freely to give new readers a sample of my writing (perchance to tempt them to pick up one of the other books), and to say . I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, and have enjoyed all the writing since. John Scalzi. December 8, 2. Posted by john at 0. PMChapter One? You're out of your fucking mind, Tom. My hands were currently occupied with a blue rubber racquetball, which I was lightly bouncing off the pane of my office window. Each quiet thock left a tiny imprint on the glass. It looked like a litter of poodles had levitated six feet off the ground and schmooged their noses against the window. Someone would eventually have to wipe them all off. It's now $2. 20 million dollars later. Not to mention your own Murdered Earth - - $8. And that's before foreign, where no one will notice that there's no plot. I'd say you got your one cheap taste. Now you've gotta pay. And she wasn't the star. And if she wasn't the star, why did you plaster her all over the posters and give her second billing? Fourteen million and 1. I turned away from the window to face my desk. Miranda Escalon, my administrative assistant, entered my office and slipped me a note. Michelle just called, it read. Remember that you have to get them to pay for her hairdresser and makeup artist. But you're asking too much. Allen is getting $2. If we give Michelle what she wants, that's $3. Where do you suggest we might make a profit? Miranda read it and raised her eyebrows. The odds of her actually giving that message to Michelle were unimaginably remote. She's not paid to do everything I say - - she's paid to do everything I should say. There's a difference. If he were, I'd be endlessly fascinated by the amount of money you're throwing to him. Therefore, I could not possibly give two shits about what you're handing him. My responsibility is to my client and getting a fair deal for her. Second: $2. 0 million for Allen Green? I'm about to go back for my 1. He's been out in the wilderness for a long time, Brad. Michelle, on the other hand, is a major star. Fourteen million is a bargain. Miranda popped her head in. She's back, she mouthed. The woman herself is on the other line. Even more important than the invention of liposuction. It has extended the career of many an actress, thus benefiting their agents, allowing them to pay your salary. Liposuction is your friend. Ambient street noise filled my earphones. Michelle was undoubtedly careening along Santa Monica Boulevard. Whatever it is, make it quick. If you didn't get it, that puts you in there with Jessica Lange and Meryl Streep. You're in good company. Besides, the pay wasn't that good. Michelle had cut someone off. I don't want to be doing Summertime Blues for the next ten years. This role would have helped me stretch. I want to work on my craft. Let's work with that for a couple of movies, okay? Your craft will still be there later. I kept that last thought in my head. No point confusing her. One in each acting category. And she's also not 2. If you want to work on your craft, we can get you into some live theater. They're doing Doll's House over at the Dorothy Chandler. I've got to get back to Brad. Anyway, Ellen Merlow just got that part. Read it in the Times today.? Michelle's a little young for the part, yes, but that's what makeup is for. Could get a whole other audience for serious drama. I popped the ball up and down on my desk. It's a nomination, easy. Like Cher in Silkwood. I could hear Brad weighing the options in his mind. The project at hand was the sequel to Murdered Earth - - called, in a burst of true creativity, Earth Resurrected. They had a problem: they killed off the hero in the first film. Which as just as well, since Mark Glavin, who played him, was a loser who was well on his way to replicating the career arc of Mickey Rourke. Cheap Chinese Aluminum Is a National Security Threat. Cheap Chinese steel has upset U. S. The Trump administration has even invoked the supposed threat to national security from cheap imports to threaten trade restrictions on steel imports. But the United States has plenty of steel- manufacturing capacity to meet its defense needs. What’s genuinely threatened, however, is another sector altogether: Aluminum. A glut of cheap Chinese aluminum has done more than hollow out that industry; it may also actually be jeopardizing national security. Since China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2. Chinese aluminum has flooded American markets, closing factories and putting people out of work. The number of aluminum smelters in the United States has fallen from 2. Eight smelters have either shut down or scaled back operations since 2. A bigger worry, however, is national security. High purity aluminum is used to make certain kinds of jets, such as Boeing’s F- 1. Lockheed Martin’s F- 3. But the United States now has just one domestic manufacturer of high purity aluminum left — Century Aluminum’s Hawesville, Ky. The investigation would determine whether or not the United States produces enough high purity aluminum to meet its needs during wartime.“You’re really left with just a kernel of the industry,” Jesse Gary, executive vice president and general counsel for Century Aluminum, told Foreign Policy. As Secretary Ross mentioned, we truly are on the precipice of losing that smelter.”Punitive tariffs of more than 3. China. In the past year, the Departments of Justice, Commerce, and Homeland Security have coordinated multiple investigations into U. S. Relief under section 2. But it still wouldn’t address the source of the problem — Chinese overcapacity. In fact, Chinese supply- side growth has continued unabated; it manufactured a new record of 2. February. That overcapacity results from Chinese subsidies to major industries, including not just aluminum but also steel, cement, solar, and glass. As the Chinese export- based manufacturing model of economic development has run out of steam over the past decade, the government has feared the loss of jobs and potential unrest that might result if major industries fail. As a result, it has provided subsidies to keep factories in production and workers at their jobs. Many Chinese aluminum companies could not continue to operate at the size and scale they do without these subsidies. In fact, that China has an aluminum industry of such gargantuan size in the first place — it currently produces more than half the world’s supply — is something of an anomaly. Aluminum production is hugely energy intensive, and so is heavily dependent on access to cheap electricity. Iceland, for example, with its abundant geothermal energy, is one of the world’s leading producers of aluminum. But the market price for electricity in China is significantly higher than in the United States or Europe; big state- owned smelters in China benefit from subsidized electricity. Aluminum producing countries have been slow to mobilize. Steel production is spread out around the world, as many countries have their own steel industries, so a glut of Chinese steel affects a larger number of countries. But aluminum production is concentrated in just a few countries, those with cheap sources of electricity. We’ve been a step behind,” said Gary. The expansion of the Chinese industry and the decline of the U. S. In addition to Trump’s recent probe, in January the Obama administration launched a complaint to the WTO against Chinese aluminum subsidies. It’s the first such complaint filed to the WTO that addresses the root cause of Chinese overcapacity, rather than aiming to apply a band- aid like anti- dumping duties. Other aluminum- producing countries, including, Russia, Canada, Japan, and the European Union, have all asked to join that WTO request for consultation. On March 9, the Aluminum Association submitted a complaint to the U. S. Department of Commerce and the U. S. International Trade Commission, requesting that anti- dumping duties be levied on aluminum foil imported from China. Representatives from the China Trade Taskforce, founded in 2. Aluminum Extruders Council, United Steelworkers. Union, and Century Aluminum, traveled to London last week to lobby Britain and the EU for their support.
